17 songs in 2017

The end of the year draws near and I wanted to do a little, light-hearted reflection. Not going to lie, 2017 was a bitch. Therefore the light-heartedness was somewhat impossible to pull off. You know, something about a roller-coaster of emotions… So, as music is a real comfort to me, I’ve decided to do a bit of a compilation of the ‘background music’ of 2017. Light-hearted? Heck yes!

January | Someone You’d Admire by Fleet Foxes

February | Where We’re Going by Maxïmo Park & Open Book by José González

March | False Hope (live) by Laura Marling

April | Mad Sounds by Arctic Monkeys & Can’t Let Go, Juno by Kishi Bashi

May | Hallo, Maandag by Spinvis & Feel It Still by Portugal. The Man

June | Montage (feat. Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe) by Andy Hull and Robert McDowell

July | Throw the Fear by Tom Rosenthal

August | In Cold Blood by Alt-J and Baauer & This Road is Long by Tom Rosenthal

September | Secret for the Mad by Dodie

October | Human by Rag’n’Bone Man

November | Come Together by Gary Clark Jr. and Junkie XL & La La Lie by Basia Bulat

December | Getting Older by Sam Fisher

You can click on each individual song to get to the right Spotify page. You can listen to the whole playlist. But I’m very interested to hear what your 2017 sounded like — and yes, I am always interested to discover new music.

  • I haven’t heard some of these songs before. i will check it out. Weirdly for me I keep listening to Back To You – Bebe Rexha and Louis Tomlinson this december. hhaa

  • i’ve never heard of these songs before and wow, dan rad!? that’s so…rad.

a big chunk of my 2017 consists of indie, synthpop with bits of jazz that have mid-century 50s-60s vibe and alternative rock/pop rock bands. i’ve been loving real slow by miami horror, good girls by LANY and the last thing by sawyer :3

    • YES! Dan starred in the film Swiss Army Man together with Paul Dano and the soundtrack is magnificent. It’s a crazy weird film, but I highly (highlyyyy!!!) recommend if you haven’t seen it yet.

Thanks for sharing your music, I only know Miami Horror but I’ll check everything out. :)

      • oh i know that movie! just haven’t watched it. it definitely does have that artsy strange vibe lol

        • ‘artsy strange vibe’ describes it perfectly, I dare you to watch it. And please let me know what you thought of it afterwards :p

  • This is a great idea and it makes me wish I could go back and have written out the songs that I was really into each month of the year so I could do one of these myself. I get really obsessed with bands and albums and songs so I might listen to something all the time for a few weeks and then forget about it for a bit so it would be a great way to revisit songs I loved at the start of the year but maybe haven’t listened to since then.

    • Ooh, I’m interested in what music you discovered this year. I really respect your taste in music (has maybe something to do with Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen). Don’t know if you do spotify, but they do a “2017 in songs” playlist this year (even though that comes out in way more than 17 songs).
